Homeopathy and Astrology?

It’s my birthday!

If you are at all interested in astrology, you will probably know this makes me a Scorpio. I am not very knowledgeable about astrology, in fact if you have an interest you probably know more than me, so I did some research to find out more about the intersection between homeopathy and the zodiac – and the information really relates to the tissue salts.

Schuessler’s 12 tissue salts have each been affiliated with a particular star sign. This dates back to 1932, when George W. Carey published his book “Relation of the Mineral Salts of the Body to the Signs of the Zodiac”. You can read the full text of this at the end of the post if you want to read more. I can tell you he is not a fan of Scorpio – death, destruction, calamity all attributed to my sign. I’m not taking it personally.

Carey starts with Aries, but it’s November, so I’m going to start with Scorpio.

Scorpio is affiliated with Calc Sulph, and this has an affinity with the liver, removing waste products from the blood stream and has a cleansing and purifying action. It is useful for acne, but Carey discusses its affinity with reproductive issues, and specifically the ovaries, testes and prostate.

Sagittarius is Silica, associated with skin, fingernails and hair, and can also be indicated for scar tissue and skin. Silica is also important when there is any pus formation, and it is a remedy for offensive perspiration.

Capricorn is Calc Phos, which is for bone and teeth, as well as connective tissue, blood and stomach acid. We think about it for problems with bones and teeth, but also when circulation is low and can be used with Ferrum Phos for anaemia. Can also be considered for enlarged tonsils or nasal polyps.

Aquarius’s tissue salt is Nat Mur, which is about fluid balance. There can be too much fluid, in oedema, or not enough fluid in dryness of constipation. Nat Mur can also have low mood, headaches, hay fever symptoms or early cold symptoms with runny discharges.

Pisces is Ferrum Phos, our first aid remedy to take at the first sign of infection. As this is needed for making red blood cells it may help with anaemia or any condition which needs more oxygen getting to tissues. It is also useful to take for first aid with bruising, bleeding, sprains or strains.

Aries is Kali Phos, the tissue salt for the nervous system. This helps the brain with thinking, but also nervous fatigue, insomnia, anxiety and grumpiness!

Taurus is Nat Sulph, indicated for elimination of fluid, helping with kidney function as well as kidney and gall stones. It helps with digestion with bile and pancreatic enzymes, as well as removing toxins.

Gemini is Kali Mur, our glandular remedy for sluggish conditions. Any thick, white or greyish skin discharges or glandular swelling, including sore throats, tonsillitis, sinusitis or ear ache can indicate Kali Mur, as can chronic rheumatic swelling.

Cancer is Calc Fluor, which is for elasticity. It is in the enamel of teeth, but also the elastic fibres of skin, muscles and blood vessels. This means it can be indicated for varicose veins, sluggish circulation or haemorrhoids, or constipation due to low muscle tone.

Leo is Mag Phos, for the muscles, particularly when there is muscle spasm or cramps. Any muscle pain including cramping or shooting pains, as well as nerve pain like sciatica or neuralgia.

Virgo is Kali Sulph, the remedy for skin and the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Deficiency in Kali Sulph shows with yellow or green mucus, or a yellow coating on the tongue, and it can be indicated for psoriasis or athlete’s foot.

Libra is Nat Phos, which is the acid neutralising remedy, and helps with bile – so digesting fats better, meaning it helps when you have trouble after eating greasy food. A Nat Phos deficiency can also increase uric acid deposits in the joints, and symptoms of gout.

Of course, with astrology it is not just your sun sign that indicates information about you. The sun sign is the position of the sun at the time of your birth, and changes every 30 days, so this is what most people know as their “star sign”. Mine, given my birthday today, is Scorpio. Also important in astrology is your moon sign, which changes every 2-3 days, and your ascendant or rising sign, which depends on the time of your birth. To get a full reading of your astrological chart all the houses also need to be taken into account.

Incorporating this, I wonder whether we need to consider more than just your sun sign in the tissue salts that you take, in order to really support every part of you.

I find this interesting, but it is another area I don’t know enough about, and at the moment I don’t have time to do a deep dive into medical astrology.

Have you ever used tissue salts in this way? Does the salt that corresponds with your sun sign resonate with you?

If you would like to read Carey’s book from 1932 you can do so here.
